Tour of Underground Architecture Masterpiece

TEHRAN.(Iranart) – ars University, a Tehran based independent institution of higher learning in art and architecture, is organizing a tour of Science and Technology Central Library.

Located on Heydarkhani Street in Tehran, the library, which belongs to Iran University of Science and Technology, was built in 2008. The unique library is famous for its central core, a cube structure with sky above and water beneath, according to Memar News (memarnews.com), a local news website specializing in architecture.

The tour is one wonderful journey underground. It will be attended by Farhad Ahmadi, 66, the architect who designed the library. He is the architect designer of other notable buildings including Isfahan International Cultural Center, Embassy of Iran in South Korea, and Dezful Cultural Center in Khuzestan Province.

Science and Technology Central Library covers an area of 12,000 sq meters. It was designed to be considered a landscape architecture with minimal interference with its surrounding structures which are a mosque, an entrance gate and the College of Computer Engineering.

As such, it was decided that the library be built underground, with a middle void in from of a cube, around which all other spaces are arranged.

The façade of the building is a platform facing the sky. It is furrowed at regular intervals with trenches of green plants. The platform covers the halls of the library located under. To bring light to the halls, deep channels are cut in the façade.

The tour of the library is slated for July 31 and is open to the public. They are required to apply for the tour via an SMS to 09364948076. The tour starts at 3 pm from the premises of Pars University, located on 2nd Street, North Kargar Street. Except for a bus fare of $1.3, the event is free.
