Paintings Inspired by Orwell’s Animal Farm

TEHRAN –(Iranart)- Animal Farm,’ a solo painting exhibition by graphic designer and animator Mohammad Babakoohi is underway at Arte Gallery in Tehran.

The exhibition opened July 14 and will run through July 23. Visiting hours are from 4-8 pm, galleryinfo.ir reported.

An introduction to the exhibit borrows from the namesake masterpiece of English novelist, essayist and journalist George Orwell (1903-1950):

“Man is the only real enemy we have. Remove Man from the scene, and the root cause of hunger and overwork is abolished forever. Man is the only creature that consumes without producing. He does not give milk. He does not lay eggs. He is too weak to pull the plough. He cannot run fast enough to catch rabbits. Yet he is the lord of all the animals. He sets them to work and gives them back a minimal food that prevents starving. The rest he keeps for himself,” Says the old wise pig in the first chapter of Animal farm.

Babakoohi, 22, explains more about the meaning of the paintings: “Humans know themselves above all other creatures because of the ideas and beliefs they hold dear in their heads.”

“History molds each dictator in a new appearance different from predecessors. But all of them look possessed with unforgettable facial features,” he added.

The artist believes “all those complimentary titles humans have given themselves do not make sense anymore. Those descriptions now serve only as a series of masks”. “Perhaps their faces were once the manifestations of might and glory; but in the course of time, they became associated with other meanings and feelings,” he added.

Arte Gallery is closed on Saturdays. It is located at no. 3, 2nd Alley, Golestan Street, Alikhani Blvd, Kurdistan Highway, south of Hemmat Highway.
