Javadi’s New Work on Edward Browne and Iran

TEHRAN.(Iranart) riter, expert in Persian literature and literary researcher and critic Hasan Javadi, 79, has recently published ‘Edward Browne and Iran,’ his latest work on the British orientalist

Edward Granville Browne (1862-1926) paid an extended visit to Iran and many of his publications are related to the history and literature of Iran. He has made undeniable contributions of immense dimensions to Iranian studies, either in the area of history or Persian literature.

Javadi had earlier written a book about Browne titled ‘E. G. Browne and the Persian Constitutional Movement’.

In his latest work, he has tried to cover a more comprehensive image of Browne. The book in 744 pages is brought out by the Tehran-based publishing house Nashr-Nou, according to the website of Written Heritage Research Center (mirasmaktoob.ir).

Javadi has taught English and Persian literature at the University of Cambridge, Tehran University and the University of California at Berkeley.

He is the author and translator of numerous books, including ‘Satire in Persian Literature’, and ‘Persian Literary Influence on English Literature.’

Javadi has translated ‘Obeyd-E Zakani: Ethics of the Aristocrats and Other Satirical Works,’ on the Persian poet and satirist of the 14th century from the city of Qazvin.  His other translations include that of celebrated Persian poet Forough Farrokhzad’s ‘Another Birth and Other Poems.’

In collaboration with Dutch author Willem Floor, who has written extensively on Iran, he translated Abbas Qoli Aqa Bakikhanov’s ‘The Heavenly Rose-Garden: A History of Shirvan & Daghestan.’

His other translations include Evliya Chelebi’s ‘Travels in Iran and the Caucasus, 1647 and 1654;’ and ‘Wake Up Call: Memoirs of a Moslem Woman’s Struggle to Educate Her People, 1907-1931.’ He edited ‘Letters from Tabriz: The Russian Suppression of the Iranian Constitutional Movement.’

Now retired, the Tabriz-born Javadi lives in the Washington DC area, where he is working on original scholarship and translations of Persian literature.
