TEHRAN.(Iranart) –S piritual Sanskrit epic of ancient India the “Mahabharata,” also known as the great tale of the Bharata dynasty, has been translated into Persian. The long epic poem has been translated by Hossein Mahmoudi, a professor at the History Department of Kharazmi University, from the English translation of the book.

It has been published by Iranian Student Book Agency, ISNA reported. “Mahabharata narrates valuable parts of Indian culture and civilization,” Mahmoudi says in the introduction of the book.   The mythological and didactic elements are arranged around a central heroic narrative about the struggle for sovereignty between two groups of cousins, the Kauravas (sons of Dhritarashtra, the descendant of Kuru) and the Pandavas (sons of Pandu). Mahabharata is the longest epic poem ever written. At about 1.8 million words, it is roughly ten times the length of Homer’s Iliad and the Odyssey combined. According to the Britannica website, Indian sage Ved Vyasa is credited as the author of Mahabharata. It is an important source of information on the development of Hinduism between 400 BC and 200 AD and is regarded by Hindus as a text about Hindu moral law and history. Hindus are the overwhelming majority (80%) in India - a country of 1.3 billion people.
