Ancient myths, tales on show at Shalman Gallery

TEHRAN.(Iranart) - A group exhibition of illustrations titled ‘One Thousand and One Nights’ is underway at Shalman Art Gallery in Tehran in which artists have depicted ancient Iranian myths and tales.

Curated by illustrator Maryam Rasoulzadeh, the exhibit includes works of 24 young artists, all Rasoulzadeh’s graphics students, galleryinfo.ir reported.

The illustrations are based on the stories in the book ‘One Thousand and One Nights’, a collection of Middle Eastern folklore, known in English as the ‘Arabian Nights’.

It is the tale of Scheherazade (Shahrazad), a wise woman who told one thousand and one stories for saving her life. She conveyed a lot of historical, traditional and social beliefs and behaviors through the stories which can be a great source of research for scholars.

According to Rasoulzadeh’s statement on the show, illustration is one of the most important and oldest disciplines of the arts which mankind has utilized throughout history, particularly by depicting old stories and tales, to convey his beliefs.

Iran has a rich history of interesting myths and stories; however, there is a weird scarcity of artistic works in its history. The most significant reason for the dearth of Iranian mythological and storied illustrations is the extraordinary holiness that people attribute to the characters of their tales and myths.

Therefore, in light of the scarcity of Iranian old tales’ illustrations, illustrating them is an effective approach to help popularize them and revive the rich history of Iranian myths.

The works are on display until August 16 at the venue of the gallery located at No. 27, Kavusi Alley, West Roodbar St., Mirdamad Blvd. Visiting hours are 4 to 8 pm.
