Abbas’s Photographs in Spain Museum

TEHRAN.(Iranart) –N oteworthy photographs taken by the late veteran photographer Abbas Attar, known in the world by his first name Abbas, went on display at Museo Patio Herreriano de Arte Contemporaneo Espanol, an art museum, in Valladolid, Spain, on Friday and will remain on view until October 28.

The exhibition “ABBAS Chronicles of the World” is a tribute to the photojournalist of Magnum Photos, an international photographic cooperative, and six decades of his career, IRNA reported.

It features 133 photos by Abbas (1944-2018) who is mostly known for his photojournalism in Vietnam and South Africa.

Born in Khash, Sistan and Baluchestan Province, Abbas emigrated from Iran with his family to France in 1952.

According to Magnum Photos, he dedicated himself to documenting the political and social life of societies in conflict.

He covered wars and revolutions in Biafra, Bangladesh, Northern Ireland, Vietnam, the Middle East, Chile, Cuba and South Africa under apartheid rule. He also documented life in Mexico over several years, and had a near permanent interest in religion and its correlation with society.

Abbas documented the legendary boxing match between Muhammad Ali and George Foreman in 1974 in a series of photographs titled “Ali the Fight”.

From 1978 to 1980, he photographed developments before and after the Islamic Revolution in Iran. His book “Iran Diary 1971-2002” is his take on the historical moments in Iran.

Overall, he published 11 photography books. Abbas died in Paris in April at the age of 74.
