Palangi coming to Ariana with ‘Ethnic Memories’

TEHRAN. (Iranart) – An exhibition featuring a collection of fine art and apparel designs, jointly created by veteran painter and sculptor Nasser Palangi and fashion designer Behnood Javaherpour will open on December 15 at Tehran’s Ariana Art Gallery.

According to Mehr News Agency, the series which is titled ‘Ethnic Memories’, includes collage paintings and a collection of clothes from one Iranian brand.

Palangi’s works, produced between 2000 and 2017, have been used as a cause inspiring the designing of the clothes made with Italian printing technology and handicraft expertise.

His paintings depict historical scenes of Iranian tribal men and women during the Constitutional Revolution (between 1905 and 1911) and the Qajar Dynasty (1789-1925). They are used to adorn men’s clothing in the fashion collection, making it a rather unique decoration that could be seen as a new contemporary style in fashion industry.

The series will be on view through December 25 at the venue, located at No. 9, Fereshteh St., Ehaliyeh neighborhood.

Born in Hamedan Province, Palangi, 60, is an adroit sculptor and university art instructor.

He graduated in visual arts from University of Tehran in 1984. At the beginning of the 1980-1988 Iran-Iraq war, he spent three years working as a war artist creating drawings, paintings and photographs. He created a series of mural paintings he called ‘My Memory of the War’ for the Jame’ Mosque of Khorramshahr, Khuzestan Province in 1981.

He has been commissioned several times to create large artworks throughout his career, including installations and two mural reliefs for the War Memorial Museum in Khorramshahr in 1997-98; a mural painting for the Treasure Gallery in Seattle, the US, 2000; a painting for the Medicines Without Border Project in Dubai; and ten sculptures titled ‘Migrants in Australia’ for the National Multicultural Festival in Canberra, Australia, 2004.

His works have been exhibited widely, from the Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art (2000) and Seyhoun Gallery in Tehran (2001), to the East & West Gallery in Victoria, Australia (2005).
