Rabindranath Tagore Commemoration Planned

TEHRAN –(Iranart)-Bengali Indian polymath and poet Rabindranath Tagore is to be commemorated next week at Molavi Theater in Tehran.

Slated for February 24, the event is organized jointly by Tehran College of Fine Art, the art and cultural magazine Bokhara, and Molavi Theater.

Chief editor of Bokhara magazine Ali Dehbashi, as well as university professors Mehdi Baghfalaki and Mitra Alavi will present talks on Tagore’s life and works, Honaronline reported.

The ceremony will read and discuss Tagore’s poems, and will conclude by a stage reading of the one-act play of Tagore titled ‘Chitra’. The stage reading will be performed by drama students from Tehran College of Fine Art.

The play is an adaptation of the story of Chitrāngadā and Arjuna from the Mahābhārata, one of the two major Sanskrit epics of ancient India.

Tagore (1861–1941) was born in Kolkata, India. He wrote poetry, fiction, drama, essays and songs; promoted reforms in education and aesthetics. He wrote in Bengali and often translated his own work into English. In 1913, Tagore won the Nobel Prize for Literature; becoming the first Asian to have received the honor. 

In his late 60s he turned to visual arts and produced 2,500 paintings and drawings before his death.
