Picnic on the Battlefield

TEHRAN (Iranart) – A stage reading of the play ‘Picnic on the Battlefield’ is to be performed at the theater hall of Entezami Museum in Tehran for nine days beginning January 27.

The short play is written by Spanish playwright, screenwriter, film director, novelist and poet Fernando Arrabal, 85. Actor and director Dariush Moadabian has translated the work into Persian and will direct the stage reading.

It is the story of two soldiers from opposing sides, both kind-hearted buffoons baffled by the politics of war they find themselves in.

The play represents the theater of the absurd because it includes two of the staple themes of this genre which are the combination of tragedy and comedy and the topic of life as a meaningless journey, Enotes.com said about Arrabal’s play.

The theater of the absurd is a post–World War II designation for particular plays of absurdist fiction written primarily by European playwrights in the late 1950s, as well as one style of theater which has evolved from their work.

According to Tiwall.com, Alireza Akhavan, Saeed Parsa, Mohammad Soltani, Milad Salehvand, Arian Safaei and Negar Nimaei will be reading the roles on stage.
