Iranian to Perform in Polish Play

TEHRAN. (Iranart) – S anam Naderi, Iranian director, actress and theater instructor living in Italy, will go on stage at Powszechny Theater in Warsaw, Poland, December 16-17.

According to the official website of the theater Powszechny.com, the play  ‘Flee! A Resort Course for Beginners’ is directed by Polish theater director Alicja Borkowska.

“The play is about Poland’s 100th independence anniversary,” Naderi said. In 1918, Poland gained its independence from the German, Austrian and Russian empires.

“It also deals with the displacement of the Polish people. Poles migrated to Iran during WWII. Some of them still live in Iran and Cyprus,” Naderi was quoted as saying by Honaronline.

In 1942, a group of Polish refugees released from scattered camps in and around the former Soviet Union, came to Iran after making the perilous journey mostly by boat through the Caspian Sea and some by land via Turkmenistan.

Some 120,000 Poles, basically children, soldiers and women, desperate to reach safety were embraced by the Iranians and given shelter in Qazvin, Tehran, Isfahan, Mashhad and Ahwaz.

The other cast members of the Polish play include Farid Torabpour, Danial Sadr, Dorota Papis, Michal Dudzinski and Lukasz Wojcicki.

Naderi set up a two-day workshop in Poland’s National Museum of Ethnography on November 30 and December 1.

The workshop focused on presenting the works and poetry of Iranian poet and film director Forough Farrokhzad who was instrumental in shaping Iran’s modern poetry.

Commenting on her workshop, she said, “It aimed at introducing Iranian modern poetry through theater and performing techniques. Important elements such as soil, flight, tree and window which persist in Forough Farrokhzad’s poetry were introduced to art students via theatrics.”
