TEHRAN.(Iranart) – F ive books were shortlisted for the “Golden” Man Booker International Prize, the special award considered for a novel to be crowned the best work of fiction released over the last 50 years.

“The English Patient,” a 1992 novel by Sri Lankan born Canadian poet, fiction writer and filmmaker Michael Ondaatje, 74, and “Wolf Hall,” a 2009 historical novel by English author Hilary Mantel, 65, are among the five books that have already won the Man Booker Prize, Deutsche Welle reported.

“In a Free State,” a 1971 novel by British writer of Indian descent V. S. Naipaul, 85; “Moon Tiger” (1987) by British writer Penelope Lively, 85; and last year’s Man Booker Prize for Fiction winner “Lincoln in the Bardo,” a 2017 experimental novel by American writer George Saunders, 59, complete the shortlist, which was announced at Hay Festival on May 26 in Wales.

All 51 of the former Booker Prize winners were considered by a panel of five judges, each tasked with reading the winning novels from one decade of the award’s history. The “Golden five” will now be put to a public vote to decide the ultimate winner, which will then be announced on July 8 at the cultural complex of Southbank Center in London.
