Pulitzer Prize Winners Announced

TEHRAN – (Iranart)- T he winners of 2018 Pulitzer Prizes, awards for excellence and achievements in newspaper, magazine, online journalism, literature and musical composition in the US, were announced Monday at Columbia University in New York.

This year, the most prestigious journalism award in the category of Public Service was shared by The New Yorker and The New York Times for their coverage of the sexual abuse of women in Hollywood and other industries around the world.

In the category of Breaking News Reporting, the staff of the Press Democrat in Santa Rosa, California, were awarded. They covered the wildfires in Santa Rosa and Sonoma County in the north of the state, according to Pulitzer.org.

Staff of The Washington Post were awarded in Investigative Reporting category for purposeful and relentless reporting that changed the course of a US Senate race in Alabama by revealing a candidate’s alleged past sexual harassment of teenage girls and subsequent efforts to undermine the journalism that exposed it.

In the Explanatory Reporting category, staff of The Arizona Republic and USA Today Network were selected for vivid and timely reporting that masterfully combined text, video, podcasts and virtual reality to examine, from multiple perspectives, the difficulties and unintended consequences of fulfilling President Trump’s pledge to construct a wall along the US border with Mexico.

The National Reporting award went to staff of The New York Times and The Washington Post for deeply sourced, relentlessly reported coverage in the public interest that dramatically furthered the nation’s understanding of Russian interference in the 2016 presidential election and its connections to the Trump campaign, the president-elect’s transition team and his eventual administration.

  International Reporting

Clare Baldwin, Andrew R.C. Marshall and Manuel Mogato of Reuters shared the prize of International Reporting for relentless reporting that exposed the brutal killing campaign behind Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte’s war on drugs.

Jerry Saltz of New York magazine was the winner of the Criticism Award for a robust body of work that conveyed a canny and often daring perspective on visual art in America, encompassing the personal, the political, the pure and the profane.

Jake Halpern, freelance writer, and Michael Sloan, freelance cartoonist from The New York Times were awarded in the category of Editorial Cartooning for an emotionally powerful series, told in graphic narrative form that chronicled the daily struggles of a real-life family of refugees and its fear of deportation.

Photography staff of Reuters were recognized in Feature Photography category for shocking photographs that exposed the world to the violence Rohingya refugees faced in fleeing Myanmar.
