Exhibition of Sermeh Embroidery
TEHRAN.(Iranart) - A n exhibition of sermeh embroideries organized by Iran’s Cultural Heritage, Handicrafts and Tourism Organization will open today in Tehran.
It is the first special exhibit on sermeh embroidery in the capital. Sermeh is an Iranian style of embroidery, dating back to the Achaemenid dynasty 25 centuries ago.
The exhibition will run until January 24 and help introduce sermeh artisans and the capacity and potential of the craft, Honaronline reported.
Sermeh reached its zenith in the Safavid era (1501-1722). In this style of embroidery, gold, silver and other metal threads are used to make decorating patterns on the surface of fabrics. However more recently threads twisted out of cheaper metals and alloys and metal like yarns have replaced gold and silver.
The works at the exhibit are created under the tutelage and supervision of sewing and embroidery specialists Shahin Ebrahimzadeh-Pezeshki, Maryam Sammak-Jalali and Fatemeh Seyyedi.
There are 150 works at the exhibit at the ICCHTO central office located on Azadi Avenue, intersection of Yadegar-Imam Highway.
Workshops will be held on the sidelines of the event to help teach techniques and applications of sermeh embroidery.
