Fleeing From Silence

Fleeing From Silence

TEHRAN. (Iranart) – Bloody Mondays and Strawberry Pies’, a 2008 documentary by the Dutch filmmaker Coco Schrijber, is to be screened on December 13 at the cinematheque of Tehran Museum of Contemporary Art (TMoCA).

It is a profound visual essay about the metaphysics of time - about how people spend their lives fleeing from the silence of existence by filling their days with busyness of life. In the film narrated by actor John Malkovich, Schrijber circles around a handful of subjects, one of which is about a young German woman who works at a baked-goods factory, glazing strawberry tarts and pensively wonders if this is where she will spend the next 30 years. There are interviews with the 101-year-old Wall Street legend Irving Kahn and Nancy Wake, 96, a dashing Second World War British spy who is now infirm. They have lived great lives that each acknowledges is turning to dust in the end.

The TMoCA cinematheque screens avant-garde, artistic and contemplative works by celebrated filmmakers on Sundays and Wednesdays. It is located next to Laleh Park, North Karegar Street.
